Step by Step

  1. The mentor can collect older black-and-white family photos or ask the seniors to bring their along. The mentor also provides some hats, scarfs and other old-fashioned clothing and accessories.
  2. At first, the group discusses the old photos brought by the mentor or seniors.
  3. Ask the children to watch carefully how the people on the photos look like, how they are positioned, where they look, what they wear and what they do. The seniors can help explaining why that is so. They can also explain how it used to be taking a picture when this ways a rare occasion and how they prepared for it.
  4. The children and adults then try to recreate those photos by posing in the same way and wearing similar clothing and accessories. They should adjust the facial mimic, their position, their appearance etc. to match the old pictures. The mentor takes pictures with an iPad or a smartphone. He can also encourage older participants to take photos as well and learn how to use the new technology.
  5. Display the pictures on a projection, on a computer or print them out. Compare them with the original photos and see if you managed to capture the same atmosphere.
